  • Nokia N900 Trailing in the 2009 Engadget Awards

    Mark Guim
    8 Feb 2010 | 4:55 am
There’s still plenty of time, but after 4 days of voting, the Nokia N900 is losing badly to the iPhone 3GS in 2 categories of the 2009 Engadget Awards. Do you think the N900 is worthy to grab the titles Smartphone of the Year or Gadget of the Year? Vote now! Nokia also snagged a nomination for the Booklet 3G in the Netbook of the Year category. I think they should win all the 3 categories, but this fanboy and Nokia blogger may be biased. You can vote until February 20th 11:59PM EDT. This is big! The latest version of Extra Protocol Plugins for Conversations and Contacts on the Nokia N900 adds support for Facebook chat, AIM, MSN, and more. The integration of instant messaging within the contacts book on the N900 is already excellent, but the addition of more services make the N900 an even more powerful messaging device. After installation, you can go to Settings – VoIP and IM accounts to add your accounts. All your IM buddies will show up in the Contacts book, but you can view them by groups, too. You can merge your contacts so that you have all your friends’…
  • Nokia N97 & N97 Mini’s Latest Firmware Hacked

    4 Feb 2010 | 10:53 pm
Just a few days after its release, the latest firmwares on the Nokia N97 and N97 mini (v11, v20, or v21) got hacked by the group, PNHT. Hacking enables users to install unsigned applications without worrying about certificate files. This is a scene from the Symbian community that I’m not too familiar with. I suggest following these guides with caution because you may brick your devices. Guide: How to hack the Nokia N97 v20/ v21 Guide: How to hack the Nokia N97 Mini v11 Thanks Ying. 3 Feb 2010 | 11:47 pm
The Nokia Ovi Store team rolled out an update on Thursday to provide faster access to relevant content with new content sorting for the store. This seems to apply to S60 devices only like the Nokia N97 mini because I do not see the changes on the Nokia N900. The update is available through a prompt when opening the Ovi Store. From the team, Our focus with this release is simple: to provide you a faster way to sort through the Store content catalog. Starting with this new release, you will notice the sorting options as you navigate through the store. These sorting options, “Top Free”,…
  • Nokia C5 Leaked – Is Codename Mystic Part of the C series?

    Mark Guim
    3 Feb 2010 | 1:56 pm
Daily Mobile just published some photos of an unannounced device called the Nokia C5. They expect it to be revealed during Mobile World Congress in less than 2 weeks. It runs Symbian S60v3 FP2 with a 2.2in screen. These photos of the C5 also seem to legitimize the leaked photos of another phone in question codenamed ‘Mystic.’ This seems to be a mid-level phone, so I don’t expect it to be priced so high. Last month, we also discovered a Qwerty device codenamed Mystic. It runs S60v3 and seems to share a similar look with the C5. Let’s all hope these aren’t the only…

Written by Tommi Vilkamo, Manager of Nokia Beta LabsOnce again, it is time to nominate the Beta Labs Contributor of the Month. This time, we sorted the list of registered Beta Labs users - more than 140000 already - in terms of how many of their comments had been marked as "helpful" by the community and "starred" by the Nokia staff. Among the leaderboard list (we won't show this in public because this is not a competition), there were mostly usual suspects. Thanks for sticking around, truly appreciated! But also, there were some new friends, including our new winner,…

    31 Jan 2010 | 11:59 pm
Written by Sethu Pillai, Nokia Custom Dictionary teamWe are pleased to publish Nokia Custom Dictionary on Beta Labs to share with the community and gather feedback. We designed this experimental application to address the wish that many S60 users have had: to be able to edit the list of words used by the phone for text prediction and transfer it between phones. Nokia Custom Dictionary does exactly that, and we’ve also given you the chance to import words from a text file.  This means you can quickly “teach” your phone commonly used words or even create specific word lists to…

  • Reusing the N97 memory reorganizer

    5 Feb 2010 | 8:45 am
Many people have found via Software Update there is a nice little application called Memory Reorganizer that recovers some of the scarce memory on the N97's C drive. The side affect of running this once is that the app will uninstall itself when its finished doing its magic job of recovering your memory... Unfortunately if you  are like me and install lots of apps, memory soon runs out and this little app seems to clean it all up nicely.   Here the tip: a) If you go to the Application Installer and remove the "Reorganizer uninstall" application. This will then allow you to…

  • Should you use Firefox Mobile or the stock N900 MicroB browser? [A Comparison]

    ang
    5 Feb 2010 | 7:43 pm
There’s a browser war going on, but it’s not the typical IE vs. Firefox series of battles. No, on the N900 it’s Mozilla vs. Mozilla, brother vs. brother, with the stock MicroB browser on one side and the latest Firefox Mobile 1.0 on the other. Which one is better? It’s a tough call, that’s for sure. I tested both browsers under the same conditions (Home wi-fi connection, clean reboot, empty caches) with my Nokia N900. For the timing tests, I used XNote Timer and took the average of three times. And now for today’s events… Startup Time How long it…

The good news, first: Firefox Mobile 1.0 was been released for Maemo 5, and it brings a couple of sweet improvements to the table. Flash, however, is not one of them. It’s disabled by default, but it’s pretty easy to get it back with these simple steps. The Setup You’ll need the latest version of Firefox Mobile 1.0. Get it from the Mozilla Catalog repository (which should have been added with the Maemo PR 1.0 update) via Application Manager. How To 1. In the address bar, type in about:config. You should get a warning message that asks you to confirm that you want to mess…
  • Nokia: Ovi Maps Now Free, a “Game-changing Move”

    21 Jan 2010 | 6:53 am
A “secret” launch event early today (one that I’m sure many of us thought was for a new handset) brought the news that Nokia’s Ovi Maps will be completely free. That’s Drive and Walk navigation, Lonely Planet guides, the whole shebang. Free. And it’s available now. Sweet. It’s a great move, but far from “game-changing”, that’s for sure. Pessimists could say it’s typical Nokia M.O. – moving to offer something after the competition, and in this case, Android Maps – but it’s still a welcome gesture. The new…

The Google Nexus One Review Yep, I picked up a Google Nexus One. For me, it’s my first serious foray into Android and the land of the Eclairs, Donuts, and Cupcakes. Would Google’s full touch-screen phone entice me to completely drop my two-week-old Nokia N900? Hardware The Nexus One is a beautiful phone. Period. It feels expensive – contrast that to the N900, which just feels like high-quality plastic for the most part – and HTC has done a great job with the look and feel. The front and sides are some kind of metallic plastic mix, while the back cover has a rubbery…

Do you love your E71 so much that not even the mighty Nokia N900 tempts you to upgrade? You're not the only one. Many other E71 Fanatics don't see a need to dish out more money for a smartphone. But there is still that part of you that wants to keep up with the latest technology. It's the current trend & a standard for newer smartphones to include a large touchscreen display with great multimedia functionality. I’ve been playing with Mapumental a bit, as it’s a front end to an awful lot of data, particularly public transport. I’ve been creating maps of how far you can travel in an hour for a few places: 1 hour from EC2: 1 hour from SW11: 1 hour from W9: But the maps only show one snapshot, one piece of the story. Being able to grab a slider, and see how things react, makes a difference – looking not only at the rate of change, but for the rate of change of the rate of change. There is no single view that can either capture or convey this, no static insightful picture.

Great LGS again tonight, looking at wine and coffee. We were also given a sample of a very interesting white wine (macerated, unusual for white wine) – it was yellow, cloudy, smelt of sweet apples, tasted herbal, slightly metallic. Also, two samples of coffee, one tasted quite traditional to me, but the second was mindblowing – smell of farmyards, just about turning perfumed/bergamot when drunk. Showed just how different coffee can be. Definitely something worth unpicking about how context and knowledge changes perception – of taste, quality, and worth. Russell’s…

Some people are questioning Maemo as an application development platform. I claim that it is one of Maemo's strong points going forward. We have always had a strong and productive maemo.org community that builds very interesting stuff. Their work has been available for more advanced Maemo users already for some time. I claim that the depth and coolness of those apps and compos beats almost any other mobile platform. And this is my vision of the future, too.My impression is that if you read reviews and blogs, all of those that start with "Internet", "Computer", "Multimedia", "Networking" or any other such terms love N900. They think it's the best device out there. Those, who think it primarily just as a phone have more concerns.Just as we planned! Happy new year!We opened Ovi Store beta today for Maemo 5, i.e. for N900. Go and check it out! More here.I made a trip during the new year. And I used my N900 to take a lot of pictures. There are at least two advantages in N900 over a conventional camera:1) The sharp high resolution screen makes it possible to really edit pictures with the device. I think somebody should build or port a good image editing software for Maemo 5. The screen would make it really useful. But even with the in-build editing capabilities you can do nice stuff.2) I can upload the images directly to my Flickr,…

one must first know the rules to break them This is a rather hyperbolic statement but Twitter is probably one of the most fascinating emergent communication and collaboration platforms i’ve come across since writing. communication and collaboration on twitter is very much an emergent, dynamic, and uniquely colored by the individual’s experience. Rather like writing in Shakespeare’s time where spelling and grammar was a fluid, people are experimenting and learning as they participate more. Everyone knew that Avatar was a technically advanced, but you will probably be surprised at the amazing fusion of performance and technology. The whole special is brilliant and if you liked the movie you will enjoy this a lot. Michael Porter popularized the idea and proposed generic strategies for organizations like Cost Leadership and Differentiation. Normally i’m not a fan of generic strategies as I don’t think they really lead to a sustainable advantage. IMHO most strategies should take such good use of your organizations talents, capabilities and resources that it should be virtually impossible to copy your strategy. In other words if you are worried about sharing your strategy with people because you think people might steel it, I’d suggest you find a new strategy. That being said I’ve…

one must first know the rules to break them This is a rather hyperbolic statement but Twitter is probably one of the most fascinating emergent communication and collaboration platforms i’ve come across since writing. communication and collaboration on twitter is very much an emergent, dynamic, and uniquely colored by the individual’s experience. Rather like writing in Shakespeare’s time where spelling and grammar was a fluid, people are experimenting and learning as they participate more. For this reason I thought I’d provide some examples of how I’m using and…

Reports suggest that Nokia readies a made in India Rs.500 ($10) and Rs.1000($20) phone for Mobile World Congress (Barcelona) In 2004, Nokia changed the rules of the mobile handhelds game by launching the Nokia 1100. The Nokia 1100 was a true “fortune at the bottom of pyramid” waiting to happen for Nokia. This opened up Asian markets and Nokia took unassailable positions in emerging markets. The rules of the game changed to cost of ownership formulas for the less privileged. Mobiles became the common man’s device. Combined with falling tariffs, the Nokia 1100 was the start of the Telecom…
